4 Must-Do’s After Purchasing A Car Seat

Reading the Chicco Car Seat Instruction ManualWhen it comes to car seat design and development, no detail is too small for Chicco. From strategic fabric selection to increased crash testing, Chicco goes above industry standards to deliver durable car seats that are designed for parent ease-of-use and longevity. Read on to learn about the Chicco car seat lifespan and situations that require their replacement.

Step 1: Register Your Car Seat

In the USA, child car seats are regulated and undergo mandatory testing and evaluation. USA child car seats are also subject to recalls under certain conditions. The quick process of registering your car seat enables the child car seat manufacturer to contact you with important information in the event of a recall.

The product registration card is one of the first items you’ll see after opening the box to your new car seat. It is pre-populated with the necessary product information, such as the model number, serial number and date of manufacture. Fill in the required personal information and pop the pre-addressed, prepaid postcard into the mail. Don’t worry about your personal information getting used for something else. Regulations prohibit this use of personal information on registration cards for anything other than to contact you in the event of a recall.

If you misplaced or failed to receive a registration card with your car seat, please visit the Chicco Car Seat & Travel System Registration page. You can easily find the necessary product information for your Chicco car seat located on the underside of the car seat or on the car seat base, printed on an adhesive manufacturer label.

Step 2: Review the Car Seat Manual

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 59% of children’s car seats are used incorrectly. We know that a car seat manual will never be the hit of the book club, but educating yourself on how to properly install your child’s car seat is one of the most important things you can do to ensure correct use and ultimately, safe use of your child’s car seat.

In the manual, you’ll find important usage information for your child’s car seat, like height and weight limits. The manual also contains all installation and cleaning instructions. Chicco car seats include a handy slot to store the manual so it’s always accessible. You can also find the product manual for your Chicco car seat online.

In addition to the product manuals, Chicco has an extensive library of product support videos including installation, transitioning between modes and removing/replacing fabrics. These how-to videos are a great resource to use in conjunction with the manual.

Step 3: Get Your Car Seat Installation Inspected

You can purchase the most expensive car seat available, but if it is not installed correctly, it may not properly protect your child in the event of a vehicle crash. While Chicco car seats are designed to be the easiest to install correctly, we still highly recommend getting your car seat installation inspected by a trained professional: a certified child passenger safety technician. During this complimentary service, the tech will not only review your installation, but they will provide tips and instruction to empower you to correctly install and use your child’s car seat every time.

How do you find a certified child passenger safety technician? Think car dealerships, fire & police stations and hospitals. Visit the NHTSA website to find a certified technician near you and call ahead to see if an appointment is needed.

Step 4: Know Your State’s Car Seat Laws

With all there is to think about as you prepare for your new baby or the new car seat for your growing child, you could easily miss the memo on your state’s car seat laws. Child car seat laws vary in scope from state to state. One state may have a generic law, only requiring your child to “ride in a federally approved car seat or booster seat that is appropriate for that child's height and weight” up to a certain age, like 6 or 8.

Other states have multiple laws for each stage in your child’s car seat journey, like a law requiring your little one to ride in a rear-facing car seat until age 2. An additional law may require your big kid to ride in a booster car seat until they reach a certain height and weight. These are only examples; please visit your State Highway Transportation Office for the most up-to-date and accurate information.

While it is important to know the car seat laws for your state, it’s also important to understand that many state laws only provide the minimum requirement. Chicco recommends that you follow NHTSA’s recommendations, which often go above and beyond state laws to keep your child as safe as possible.
