What is a belt-positioning booster seat?

How to choose a Belt-Positioning Booster Seat

When choosing a booster seat, it's important to know there are two types of belt-positioning boosters: high-back and backless. High-back boosters feature a multi-position, easy-adjust headrest and rigid seat belt guides, while backless boosters are lightweight and portable. Both belt-positioning booster seats are designed to raise the child so the vehicle’s seat belt fits properly, low across the hips and across the middle of the chest and shoulder. This positioning helps distribute crash forces and reduce injury risk. Booster seats are intended for children at least 4 years old, 38" tall, and 40 lbs, and they provide a critical transition from a harness car seat to using the vehicle’s seat belt. Children should continue using a booster until the seat belt fits correctly without it. Some states also have specific height and weight laws for booster use, so be sure to check your local requirements.

Checklist for Choosing a Belt-Positioning Booster Car Seat

Choose between the head and shoulder protection of a high-back booster or the lightweight portability of a backless booster seat.
If you decide on a high-back belt-positioning booster up front, you can remove the backrest later to create a backless belt-positioning booster.
Belt-positioning boosters from Chicco do not have a harness option, so make sure your big kid is at least 4 years old and mature enough to buckle in using the seat belt.

Belt-Positioning Booster Seats - Frequently Asked Questions

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that you keep your child in their forward-facing harness car seat until they reach the height or weight limit allowed by the car seat manufacturer. Belt-positioning booster seats are designed for children who are at least 4 years of age, at least 38" tall, weigh at least 40 lbs. and can sit relatively still in the same seated position throughout the car ride.

For high-back belt-positioning booster seats, the vehicle seat shoulder belt slides through the shoulder belt guide on the booster seat and then under the booster seat armrest closest to the belt buckle. Chicco backless booster seats are equipped with a shoulder belt clip to help position the vehicle seat shoulder belt. The lap portion of the vehicle seat belt will go under the booster seat armrests on both sides. Chicco belt-positioning boosters are equipped with lap belt guides to help position the vehicle seat belt for proper use.

The high-back belt-positioning booster seat should sit up against the vehicle seat back, with no spaces or gaps. If the vehicle seat has a headrest that pushes the booster forward, the headrest should be removed. If you are not able to remove the headrest, you may need to use a backless booster.

A backless belt-positioning booster is simply placed on the vehicle seat. Please reference your product manual or installation videos for more information on proper use and installation.

The seat pad fabric on your belt-positioning booster seat can be hand washed using soap and water, or machine washed in cold water on a delicate cycle using mild detergent. The fabrics should be hung to dry. Please refer to the product manual for how to remove the seat cover and additional cleaning and maintenance information.
